How to conduct an investigation has always been one of the questions asked of serious paranormal investigator hopefuls. The procedures during an investigation can be varied and plentiful but here is a good place to start:
1. Start with an opening prayer.
2. Draw a map of each room indicating possible man-made EMF disturbances (lamps, lights, light switches, electrical plugs, humidifiers, clocks, electronic fitness equipment, appliances, smoke alarms, etc.).
3. Using an EMF reader, take baseline readings of what you have indicated on your room map.
- Place an arrow in the direction you are facing for your reading.
- Indicate the time.
- Write down the reading.
4. Using a temperature reader, take baseline readings of what you have indicated on your room map.
- Place an arrow in the direction you are facing for your reading.
- Indicate the time.
- Write down the reading.
5. Place tape/video recorders where needed.
- Make note of where they are placed. This can be accomplished by turning them on and recording it on the device. Also, note what equipment was placed (you don’t want to leave it behind).
- Keep track of the time for changing tapes or memory cards, or even uploading to a computer.
6. Conduct a walkthrough of the site at least every hour.
- Take photographs at designated areas.
- Do the walkthrough with a video recorder.
- Do the walkthrough with a voice recorder.
- Remember to state the date, time, and people present for the record as well as what you are doing.
- Take EMF readings and record the results as above.
- Take temperature readings as above.
7. After a walkthrough, set up and conduct experiments.
- Make note of the date, time, and what type of experiment you are conducting.
- Indicate the items used.
- When the experiment(s) have been conducted, note the date and time.
Note any results or lack thereof.
8. Once the investigation has concluded (and before the end of the scheduled investigation):
- Breakdown the equipment that was setup.
- Make sure you have ALL of your equipment.
- End with a closing prayer.
10. Debrief the investigation team.
11. On to the investigation evaluation.
